The Port of Harlingen has completed the installation of 100 Fonroche solar-powered lights to improve visibility and safety along port roadways and access areas. The grid-free lighting system uses solar energy to provide consistent illumination for truck traffic, employees and nearby areas while reducing energy costs and environmental impact. The project was funded primarily through a $7 million Texas Department of Transportation Seaport Connectivity Program grant, which covered 75% of the total cost. The upgrade supports increased activity and longer operating hours through more sustainable infrastructure. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. to mark the project’s completion.
