BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a new economic development plan. It is called Plan Mexico - Strategy for Equitable and Sustainable Economic Development for Shared Prosperity.
Sheinbaum said the plan is a roadmap to industrial transformation by 2030.
Mexico’s Consul General in Brownsville, Judith Arrieta Mungia explained Plan Mexico in depth on a Facebook Live event on March 25, 2026. Ahead of this, Arrieta sat down for an interview with the RGG Business Journal. She said the plan could be titled, “Where Opportunity Meets Prosperity.”
The key objectives are:
- Develop a long-term strategy for regional development.
- Promote near shoring to attract global supply chains.
- Boost national and regional production through import substitution.
- Relaunch the “Made in Mexico” program.
- Create high-quality jobs in manufacturing and services.
- Strengthen local supply chains with higher value added contributions.
- Advance regional development through focused industrial and well-being hubs.
The goals for 2030 are:
- Become a Top Ten global economy.
- Create a 28 percent investment-to-GDP ratio by 2030.
- Create 1.5 million jobs in strategic industries.
- Have 50 percent of public procurement sourced from Mexican industries, with increased domestic content across key sectors.
- Reduce approval timelines for investment processes from 2.6 years to one year by cutting 50 percent of bureaucratic steps.
- Promote environmental sustainability through initiatives like water reuse and clean energy adoption.
