MCALLEN, Texas - Carlos L. Margo, dean of industrial training and economic development at South Texas College, has announced a restructuring of his department.

Speaking at his college’s 2nd Annual Apprenticeship Summit, Margo said STC’s industry training programs are now part of Academic Affairs. Anahid Petrosian runs this division as STC’s vice president of academic affairs.

The department also has a new name: The Center for Advanced Training and Apprenticeships.

“I do want to clarify here on the title of our department. I know most of you here and (I know you know) it's been going through different name changes throughout the last several years. We were the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing We were Industry Training and Economic Development. And now we're the Center for Advanced Training and Apprenticeships,” Margo told the audience.

“And the reason for that is because of a broadening of the scope of our services. It's customized training not only for manufacturing. What we're offering now is a lot more broad.”

Margo said his department is now offering programs such as Chef and Cook, which is a pre-apprenticeship right now. And the department is doing Veterinary Assistant.

“It is all through the platform of apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship. That's what's given us a chance to expand beyond manufacturing, which used to be our focus. Not to say that it's not anymore, but it (manufacturing training) is now a part of many different numerous programs that we have to offer with regards to up-skilling and customized training,” Margo said.

“And now we, at the Center for Advanced Training and Apprenticeships, fall under Academic Affairs, which is really a good strategic move. Now we have the support of the entire division of academic affairs under Anahid Petrosian. We really appreciate the support.”

Margo said he wanted to recognize the entire Academic Affairs division.

“Without their support, by allowing us to use some of their structures and faculty and adjuncts, we could not get along. So let me recognize the entire division. I know you are here, some of the deans, and I just want to say thank you for your support. We're glad to be here and we're glad to have that team support as far as faculty resources, because that means a lot to us and it helps us a lot.”
