EDINBURG, Texas - David Ortiz, South Texas regional director of the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center, spoke recently at a McAllen Chamber of Commerce event in Edinburg.
The roundtable event was hosted by South Texas Health System.
Ortiz said TMAC, which is connected to UT-Rio Grande Valley, is expanding.
“Our main mission is to make business competitive, especially small and medium sized manufacturing companies. But we've been expanding our services to different areas,” Ortiz said.
“We do we did a strategic plan for the City of Pharr, their 2022-2027 strategic plan. And we were working on strategic planning for the Pharr International Bridge as well.”
Ortiz said his team’s help with the Pharr International Bridge will include looking at what other potential services they can provide.
Another entity TMAC has helped is the Brownsville-based nonprofit, MiCASiTA. “So we helped that organization go from traditional manufacturing… to the modular manufacturing layout.”
Ortiz said that with this transition, MiCASiTA has improved productivity and reduced production costs.
TMAC has also worked with various maquiladoras in Mexico, Ortiz explained.
“So we go there, we train them, we do an operational excellence type of service. What does that mean? We implement everything that has to do with their production system. We manufacture Six Sigma, and we help and we train their people to be part of those initiatives. So we go there, we make layout designs, layout changes, as well everything that has to do with the with the operation and production.”
