Groundbreaking ceremony held for Edinburg's Plaza Guerlain project

EDINBURG, Texas - Edinburg Economic Development Corporation and the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce held a groundbreaking ceremony for Plaza Guerlain, a new mixed-use development that city leaders hope will become a “vibrant” hub in the east side of the city.

Located at 2200 S. Raul Longoria Rd., the $50 million development will cover 15 acres just south of UTRGV’s Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium. The project is part of a 400-acre master-planned community by Los Lagos Development, LLC., which consists of seven residential subdivisions and the Los Lagos Golf Course.

What distinguishes Plaza Guerlain is the blend of commercial and residential. Edinburg EDC Executive Director Raudel Garza says the plaza will have around 55 multi-level office and retail spaces as well as a 190-door luxury apartment complex, to be completed in Phase II. He adds that letters of intent to lease the spots have already been received for eateries and night-life hangouts and applauds Los Lagos Development President and CEO Eduardo Lopez for the growing interest.

“Mr. Lopez has been developing at Los Lagos well over 600 homes already,” said Raudel Garza. “He has done a daycare center and also another commercial plaza as you enter into the Los Lagos Golf Course. And, so, he has proven that he can do this kind of development, and we’re really excited.”

Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza also expressed enthusiasm for the project, envisioning a center that will bring together neighborhood residents and UTRGV students.

“Vaqueros Football is just within walking distance of this location,” said Ramiro Garza. “I can see people are going to come here and probably walk to the stadium. But, there’s a lot of people who live here. Los Lagos has grown. There’s over 1,000 homes that are here. This is long overdue to have a development like this.”

With all the permitting and finances in place, construction is expected to start soon and take about a year to complete. Raudel Garza estimates that by next fall, businesses in the plaza will be open and ready for customers.

In the meantime, Ramiro Garza says that the city and surrounding communities will still benefit from the development as it creates job opportunities for locals.

“Beyond the building and investment, this project is about people and community,” said Ramiro Garza. “This project’s going to create nearly 200 jobs when it’s all completed, providing opportunities for our residents and strengthening our local economy.”
