BROWNSVILLE, Texas – U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez has announced a $3,193,735 grant for Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport.

The funding comes from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The grant will be used to rebuild the final phase of the airport’s Runway 18-36 project. The runway provides flights from United Airlines, American Airlines and Aerus Airlines.

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen, Jr. thanked Gonzalez and the FAA for helping in the transformation of the runway.

"The Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport is an important gateway to South Texas, and these federal dollars ensure that it will continue to grow safely and sustainably,” Cowen said.

The investment is a major win for Brownsville, Gonzalez said.

“Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we will strengthen our infrastructure and support long-term growth,” Gonzalez said. “I remain committed to modernizing and expanding our airports to better serve our region’s growing economy and population.”

The director of aviation the airport, Angel Ramos, said a renovation to the project is crucial for the airport. He said construction will begin in early 2026.

“Reconstructing Runway 18-36 will enhance safety standards and will allow us to better serve both passengers and cargo carriers.” Ramos said. “The continued support from the FAA and our federal partners demonstrates the importance of our Brownsville airport to the region.”
