GBEDC Welcomes Saronic: $3.2B Maritime Tech Hub to Bring 10,000 Jobs to Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Following a landmark joint announcement by the Office of Governor Greg Abbott and the Port of Brownsville, the Greater Brownsville Economic Development Corporation (GBEDC) has officially welcomed Saronic Technologies to the region.

GBEDC leaders said the defense technology firm's arrival marks one of the most significant and transformational industrial alignments in South Texas history.

The company's planned $3.2 billion investment is slated to establish a state-of-the-art software-defined shipyard, known as Port Alpha, bringing an estimated 10,000 high-quality jobs at full buildout. Local officials characterize the development as a critical turning point that will fundamentally elevate the regional workforce and cement the Rio Grande Valley's position as a major center for advanced manufacturing and national defense innovation.

Gilberto Salinas, president and CEO of the Greater Brownsville EDC, emphasized the generational scale of the announcement: "This investment is ultimately about creating opportunities for the people of Brownsville. Thousands of families will have access to high-quality careers, local businesses will benefit from increased economic activity, and our young people will see a future where they can build successful careers right here at home."

Ben Peña, a partner at CPA firm Burton, McCumber & Longoria, LLP, chairs the Greater Brownsville EDC. He said: “At Greater Brownsville EDC, our work doesn't end when a project is announced. Our commitment is to help companies succeed by connecting them with the resources, partnerships and workforce they need to grow. When businesses succeed in Brownsville, our residents, local businesses and regional economy succeed alongside them.”

The Saronic project forms the centerpiece of a wider, aggressive push by regional leaders to capture the high-tech supply chain. The GBEDC is currently developing the Greater Brownsville Tech Park, a sprawling 700-acre industrial development explicitly designed to host auxiliary suppliers and manufacturing partners supporting market leaders like Saronic Technologies and SpaceX.

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen, Jr., said that local higher education institutions and regional workforce development boards are actively collaborating to tailor curriculum directly to the technical needs of the new shipyard.

“The arrival of Saronic Technologies at the Port of Brownsville marks another major step forward in the continued growth and diversification of our local economy, creating new opportunities for residents across Brownsville and the surrounding region,” Cowen said.

“This investment is especially important for our community as we strengthen our position in advanced manufacturing and develop a more competitive, resilient economic market. Our local universities, colleges and workforce partners are working cohesively to prepare residents for the job growth ahead.”

According to comprehensive projections released by regional development partners, the long-term fiscal footprint of the project is massive. Saronic is anticipated to generate an estimated $168.4 billion in economic impact across Cameron County over the lifecycle of the development. This includes $1.6 billion in direct economic activity during the heavy construction phase, followed by an estimated $5.6 billion injected annually into the regional economy throughout 30 years of sustained maritime operations.

In addition to private sector growth, the municipal treasury will see direct benefits. The project is modeled to generate more than $203 million in direct fiscal impact for the City of Brownsville, giving local administrators key revenue to fund vital public services and bolster neighborhood infrastructure.

The competitive recruitment process required unprecedented alignment across public entities. Over several months, the GBEDC worked side-by-side with the Port of Brownsville, the Cameron County Commissioners Court, and the Point Isabel Independent School District to secure the package. To guarantee a local pipeline of skilled workers, the GBEDC board committed $10 million in direct funding for dedicated local workforce development programs.
