De la Garza Putegnat: Texas Lyceum's big 2025 conference in Mexico City was a great success

Posted

As I reflect on this year, I am reminded that leadership extends beyond our titles and careers—it is in how we serve, where we give our time, and what we support.

One of my highlights was serving as co-chair of The Texas Lyceum’s international conference, “Beyond Borders: Immigration & the Texas Economy,” alongside Monica Lupita Perez and Mario Porras.

We surpassed our attendance and fundraising goals by more than double! Our conference was a powerful reminder of what is possible when committed leaders unite around a shared vision and work together to move it forward.

As a Mexican-American who loves and values both countries, has family on both sides of the border, wants to keep my kids safe, has a background in economic development, and is vice president of a Texas company that exports fuel to Mexico, serving as co-chair of this conference was profoundly meaningful.

Beyond Borders brought together leaders, experts, and visionaries to explore the complexities of immigration, border policy, and the economic ties that bind Texas and Mexico. Our distinguished speakers included former President of Mexico Vicente Fox Quesada, who made history when he became president after 71 years of one-party dominance. Working directly with President Fox and First Lady Marta Fox was a huge honor and pleasure.

Our renowned speakers also included U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson, who hosted a wonderful reception at his residence; policy experts who examined immigration’s ripple effects on education, healthcare, and the workforce; city leaders who shared insights on cross-border dynamics; and industry leaders who highlighted real-time trade challenges and opportunities.

Our goals were:

1. Seek to understand all sides of the immigration debate and how it connects to the Texas economy;

2. Foster civil discourse — moving from politically charged and divisive conversations to thoughtful dialogue that paves the way for real solutions;

3. Deliver an insightful, enriching, and unforgettable experience.

According to the Texas Lyceum Poll, Texans’ top concerns for over a decade have been immigration, border security, and the economy. Mexico is Texas’s largest trading partner ~ 10.4 percent of Texas GDP ($281 billion), the largest share of GDP from trade of any U.S. state. This trade supports over eight million jobs. Our shared prosperity is undeniable.

I want to thank all our speakers, sponsors, honorary alumni cochairs, and committee members whose efforts made this conference a resounding success! I also want to thank Lyceum President Crayton Webb, for trusting us with this conference.

Texas and Mexico have a symbiotic relationship. To compete in the global economy, we must focus on bilateral solutions that transcend borders and politics. I hope attendees felt enlightened by diverse perspectives, encouraged by new possibilities, and inspired to be part of the solution. Together we can work, beyond borders, toward a more prosperous future for Texas, Mexico, and our shared region. ¡Unidos, Sí Se Puede!
