BROWNSVILLE, Texas - April Castañeda, executive director of Donna Economic Development Corporation, gave a brief update on her department’s work at a South Texas Manufacturers Association meeting.

Castañeda spoke about a new manufacturing company coming to her city and an eagerly-awaited groundbreaking ceremony for southbound commercial truck movements and a high-tech inspection systems at the Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge.

“Regarding manufacturing we do have a company from New York that's relocating. Their main manufacturing location is Monterrey, Mexico. They'll be finishing it off in Donna. They are investing roughly $1.7 million,” Castañeda said.

“Another big thing that's happening is the international bridge ceremony that we will have on October 23 at 10 am.”

The STMA meeting was held at the Brownsville Events Center.

The Donna EDC website points out that the City of Donna is strategically positioned in the middle of the Rio Grande Valley. It says this allows “smooth connection” along the interstate for retail and industrial growth.

“The City of Donna is the epicenter for international commerce and trade,” the website states.

“Donna's strategic location in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley positions the city as a premier logistics and trade hub along the U.S.–Mexico border. At the center of this advantage is the Donna–Rio Bravo International Bridge. The city is directly served by Interstate 2, connecting businesses east to Harlingen and Brownsville and west to McAllen and Pharr, with additional access via FM 493 to the international crossing and nearby regional airports for air cargo and passenger travel.”

With regard to the international bridge, the website states:

“The Donna Economic Development Corporation is advancing plans to expand the Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge, a project aimed at increasing capacity for commercial and passenger crossings between Donna, TX and Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

“The expansion is designed to reduce wait times for cross-border trade and travel, supporting the continued growth of international commerce that moves through the Rio Grande Valley. As one of the region's ports of entry, the bridge plays an important role connecting local businesses to markets across the border.”

City and Donna EDC officials say the project reflects the community's ongoing investment in the infrastructure that supports Donna's position as a hub for cross-border trade and logistics.

Highlights of the expansion project include:

  • Additional Crossing Lanes: New lanes for commercial and passenger vehicles to help reduce congestion and wait times.
  • Modernized Inspection Facilities: Upgraded infrastructure to support faster, more efficient processing of cross-border traffic.
  • Long-Term Economic Impact: Expanded capacity to support continued growth in trade, logistics, and related industries in Donna.

“The Donna Economic Development Corporation continues to work alongside city, state, and federal partners to support infrastructure improvements that strengthen Donna's role in regional and international trade,” the DEDC website states.
