Cardenas: Where Innovation Meets Community

Posted

Last month, I shared the foundation behind everything we're building: fiber, connectivity, and why a well-connected city is a competitive one. This month, I want to tell you about a milestone moment that put all of that work on full display.

On May 6, Brownsville hosted the Smart City Innovation: AI Solutions Transforming South Texas conference at the Brownsville Events Center. It was, without question, one of the most energizing days I have experienced since taking on the role of this city’s CIO.

The event brought together city leaders, technology executives, IT departments from across the Rio Grande Valley, and national partners all under one roof, in our city, to talk about what we are building here.

Among the companies joining us were SHI, Centific, Lenovo, and NVIDIA, names that represent the cutting edge of AI infrastructure, computing, and enterprise technology. The fact that these organizations chose Brownsville as the location for this conversation says something important about where our city now stands.

Our goal was straightforward: connect leaders, spark ideas, and show how AI-driven solutions are already strengthening border security, modernizing infrastructure, and elevating emergency response right here in South Texas.

Sharing What We've Built… So Others Can Too

One of the things I am most proud of from this event was the spirit of collaboration behind it. We did not organize this conference to simply showcase Brownsville. We organized it because we believe the region rises together.

We extended invitations to IT departments from across the region and the country. The infrastructure we have built can benefit communities beyond our city limits, including our fiber network, AI platform, and connectivity backbone. We want to show them how to leverage it.

That is the vision behind the Brownsville Intelligent Operations Center: not just a smarter city government, but a model that other communities can learn from and build upon.

Recognition That Belongs to All of Us

The City of Brownsville has been recognized by SHI International as one of the most innovative cities in the United States following an extensive review of IT projects and roadmaps submitted by cities across the country.

Events like May 6 are what that recognition is about. It is not about a single project or a single department. It is about a team, a city, and a community that decided to stop waiting and start building.

Tech Tip: Think Before You Share Your Location

Location sharing is one of the most convenient features on our phones. It helps with navigation, lets you check in with family, and powers apps that make daily life easier. But it is also one of the most overlooked privacy settings on our devices.

Here are a few simple habits to protect your location data:

  • Review your app permissions. Go into your phone's settings and check which apps have access to your location. Many apps request location access but do not actually need it to function. Revoke access for any app where it is not essential.
  • Choose "While Using" over "Always" When an app asks for location access, select "While Using the App" rather than "Always" This prevents apps from tracking your location in the background.
  • Be cautious on social media. Tagging your location in real time can reveal patterns about where you live, work, or spend time. Consider waiting to post until after you have left a location.
  • Turn off location for photos. Many smartphones embed location data directly into photos. If you share images publicly, this metadata can reveal exactly where a photo was taken. Check your camera settings to disable location tagging on photos

A few small adjustments can make a significant difference in protecting your privacy and your family's safety.

What we built on May 6 is already becoming what comes next. Every conversation, every connection made that day is part of a larger story… one that belongs to this community as much as it does to any technology platform or city department. In the months ahead, I will continue sharing updates as that story unfolds, including the real-world impact you will start to see and feel across Brownsville. As always, I would love to hear from you. What stood out to you? What do you want to know more about? Your voice helps shape what we build next.
