BROWNSVILLE, Texas - It’s going to be a breeze to fly from Brownsville to Orlando.
That is, on Breeze Airlines.
The Utah-based, low-cost company has announced it will be connecting the two cities four months from now.
The first of its 137-seat planes is scheduled to take off on May 15 from the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport.
Bud Hafer, a company spokesman, said they are excited to provide the new service on what he said it’s an underserved market.
“Brownsville has been one of those communities we have been looking at for a while,” he said after a press conference held Wednesday, Jan 28, in the airport lobby. “We are here now.”
Hafer said Breeze will start flying offering a one-way ticket to Orlando for $79 as an introductory price.
However, he said their airplane tickets are more affordable, compared to other airlines.
The new service was announced during one of the best turnouts Breeze has seen in the nearly six-plus years it has been operating.
Scores of city officials, representatives of a couple of legislators and local residents attended the event to welcome the new airline.
Alan Guard, the interim Brownsville city manager, said the new company represents an investment for the city as it’s expected to increase tourism and to create new opportunities for families to travel to a major destination – Orlando, Fl.
“We needed it,” he said of the airline. “It’s important for the community to support this new airline.”
City Commissioners Tino Villarreal and Linda Macias said they couldn’t be more proud to announce the new connectivity between the two cities.
“This will support our local businesses and our residents,” Villarreal said. “All of this happened because of a strong partnership and strong community support.”
Macias said the announcement is great for Brownsville.
“We have brought Aerus,” she said, “and today we’re excited to announce Breeze is here.”
Aerus is an airline that has been connecting Brownsville with the industrial city of Monterrey, Mexico, since in October 2024.
