BCIC launches BIG LIFT grant program

Posted

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - The Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation announced the launch of the BIG LIFT Program, a citywide grant initiative that provides funding for exterior improvements at locally owned small businesses.

The program expands the approach used through the BIG Property Improvement Grant Program in Historic Downtown Brownsville to commercial corridors and neighborhoods throughout the city.

Eligible businesses may receive reimbursement grants covering 80% of approved project costs, up to $30,000. Applicants are responsible for the remaining 20% and must pay project costs upfront before reimbursement. An example of a business that successfully went through the program is Aroma Espresso, a local coffee shop that sells nicely styled drinks and bagels. According to BCIC, the program gave Aroma Espresso rent support for one year as they grew their shop.

To be eligible in the program, businesses must be located within Brownsville city limits, be locally owned and independently operated, have fewer than 20 employees and have been actively operating for at least two years. Additional requirements include current property tax status, compliance with local regulations and submission of contractor quotes. Tenants must also provide property owner authorization. The program is open to commercial property owners and for-profit business tenants.

Applications will open by district throughout a 12-month rollout:

District 1: June 1–July 10, 2026

District 2: Sept. 1–Oct. 9, 2026

District 3: Dec. 1, 2026–Jan. 15, 2027

District 4: March 1–April 19, 2027

Funding is limited and awards will be made through a competitive review process. BCIC staff will evaluate and score complete applications before presenting recommendations to the BCIC Board of Directors for final consideration.
